The historic ship U-96 was commissioned on September 14, 1940. The experiences of the war correspondent Lothar-Günther Buchheim, who took part in one of the trips under the command of Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, inspired him to write the novel on which the film "Das Boot" is based.
